Working Holidays Abroad

What will this placement involve?

Transcribing testimonies

• For this placement an A-Level or above standard of French is required.

• Volunteers will be expected to transcribe, translate and categorise the testimonies of survivors of the genocide from tapes at either the Avega centre or in the Solace Ministries.

• Help is also needed to edit and catalogue the testimonies.

• Whilst on this placement volunteers may also undertake clerical work and perform basic administrative tasks, or assist in the coordination of a new memorial centre, which is currently under construction (those with experience in event planning and management may particulary enjoy this aspect of the placement).

Teaching English and Maths

• Qualified teachers are preferred for this placement, however, those with a certain knowledge of the subjects will also be considered (no knowledge of French is necessary).

• Volunteers on this placement will work in the Avega Centre in the Eastern region of Rwanda.

• Classes will vary in size, and will consist of children of mixed abilities and ages, all of whom have missed out on vital years of education.
• Teachers are asked to prepare basic lessons with limited resources (which are shared with local teachers).

• Volunteers may have the chance to help out on a model farm in their leisure time, but as this is work that can be done by local people, this is not an essential part of this placement.

On both placements volunteers will be expected to work from 9.30am to 3.30pm, Monday to Thursday and a half day on Friday. This leaves the evenings free for volunteers to share and discuss their day's experiences with the counsellor or the other volunteers, and also means they have long weekends for relaxation and enjoyment.
